A headboard is the most important decorative element of your bed.  Sheets and comforters can easily be replaced and lose their impact on an unmade bed.  However, the headboard towers over your bed.  It sets the tone for your entire bedroom.  If you have indulged yourself with a king sized mattress, your headboard will be over six feet long.  A king size wood headboard can bring warmth and depth to your bedroom.

There are two basic styles of king sized wood headboards.  You can purchase a slatted headboard or a solid headboard.  Both can be made out of any kind of wood, but will bring a different feel into your bedroom.

A slatted wooden headboard consists of an exterior frame with spaced slats in the middle.  Almost all the time, these slats are vertical.  Slats can be flat pieces of wood with tabbed ends that fit into the frame.  They can also be spindles of turned wood, such as you might see in Amish and early American styles.

A solid king size wooden headboard can be plain, paneled, or carved.  A plain headboard will be made from one or many boards of wood joined together as seamlessly as possible.  Plain headboards let the natural beauty of the wood come through.  Paneled headboards generally have two squares created by a thin strip of veneer.  The wood that goes inside the veneered squares often runs against the grain of the outer wood.  A carved headboard can range from simple scroll work at each corner to a fantastic creation of cherubs, clouds, and other mythical figures.

The wood for your king size wooden headboard can come from almost any tree.  There is softwood, such as pine, fir, and spruce.  These woods are easier to work with and look best with a light stain finish.  It is possible to get knotty pine and use the natural pattern of the wood to give your headboard texture.  Hardwood is costlier and therefore considered more luxuriant.  For instance, mahogany is a hardwood.  Walnut, oak, and maple are all popular American hardwood.  Most of the time, hardwood stains darker than softwood.

No matter what style or material you chose for your king size wood headboard, know that it is going to be the centerpiece of your bedroom.  Look for tables, desks, and dressers that match.  Accent the feel of your wood headboard by choosing coordinating bedspreads and pillows.
