King Size Bookcase HeadboardsFor the professed bibliophile, too many books are never enough.  If they can’t dedicate an entire room in their house to books, they will generally convert both their living room and their bedroom into quasi-libraries.  A great place to store books in the bedroom in on a king size bookcase headboard.

There are many advantages to having a bookcase built into your headboard.  First and foremost, it means that you can store more books.  For someone with a large personal library, wall space comes at a premium and should not be wasted with a merely decorative headboard.  Having a bookcase built into your headboard also mean that there is shelf space to keep your glasses, a mug of coffee, a small reading light.  An extra bedside table is no longer needed.  If you have your bookcase headboard in your child’s room, you can hold all the bedtime storybooks in one convenient location.  In the master bedroom, a king size bookcase headboard can be a great place to prominently display favorite novels or poetry, as well as a place to store your current reading selections.

There are many different varieties of king size bookcase headboards.  Some are multipurpose units.  On the lowest section will be a shelf concealed by a sliding panel.  This can double as a backrest or hide extra bed linen, Kleenexes, or anything else you don’t want on display.  The upper shelves will then be filled with books.  Many bookcase headboards have their shelves protected by sliding plexiglass.  This serves the double purpose keeping your books free from dust and keeping your head free from falling books.  Beyond these practical concerns, some headboards are tall and mimic a floor to ceiling bookshelf.  Others are short and have a top wide enough to display knickknacks (or more books!) on top of them.  As long as you choose a king size bookcase headboard you should have enough space to keep your favorite books close at hand.

There is a debate going on as to whether your king size bookcase headboard should be built in or freestanding.  It may be tempting just to put a large bookcase behind your bed.  However, if your floor is uneven or your bed shifts, you can risk toppling the entire contents of the shelf all over your bed.  If you choose to use a freestanding bookcase, make sure you bolt it to your bed frame.  This option also gives you more freedom of design.
